Charlene Knox Farris – Session 1
AT HOME AT SEA – Searsport’s Lincoln and Joanna Colcord

Audience:
All
This presentation will feature an “old fashioned slide show” to complement a talk on the Colcords by Charlene Knox Farris, native of Searsport, granddaughter of a sea captain, and “Unofficial Historian of Searsport”.   Learn about the fascinating 19th century practice of American Sea captains, during the Age of Sail, of taking their wives and families on their voyages. This began around 1840 and became quite common. It was done on U. S. ships in the merchant trade and on whalers.  “At Home At Sea” will concentrate on one family in particular, that of brother and sister Lincoln and Joanna Colcord of Searsport. Through childhoods spent on their father’s merchant ships, these children experienced a way of life we can only imagine, and captured it in diaries and letters home which have been preserved.

Kris Braga and Linda BoweSession 1, Session 2
INTENTIONAL ASSET BUILDING
Audience: All
Intentional Asset Building is an important skill beneficial to anyone working with youth.  This workshop will focus on the 40 building blocks of healthy youth development as identified by The Search Institute®.  Utilizing this research-based information, the workshop will provide concrete asset-building techniques that will boost student confidence and increase desirable behaviors.  Asset building is based on the awareness that _people_, not programs, make the difference for kids.  A wonderfully refreshing approach for all educators!

Kristina Braga is a certified teacher and director of afterschool programs who has made the teaching of 40 Developmental Assets® to adults a personal goal.  She has facilitated trainings to educators and afterschool staff across the state.

Linda Bowe is currently the principal at Stockton Springs Elementary School in MSAD #56. Before this position, she worked as a consultant and facilitator with the Great Maine Schools Project and the Center for Educational Transformation. She served as a graduate instructor at the University of Maine for many years. A former special education teacher at Mt. View Junior High, she became Sweetser’s first integration specialist when that agency opened its Belfast campus in 1995.
